FAQ

How do I choose the right kind of diaper for my baby?

Every family is different, and so are their individual diapering needs. The simplest diapering method for most families (in my opinion) are medium sized Prefold diapers with a simple Velcro wrap. This type of diapering system is very easy whether parents choose to launder cloth diapers at home or have a diaper service. A medium size can practically last throughout an infancy, so extra money won’t be spent on needing new sizes every few months. It is also very nice to have a few fitted, All-In-One’s, or pocket diapers of choice for leaving the house or overnight use.

Talk to other parents about methods that they may have used, and see if you can find some different types of pre-worn diapers to try before making an investment.

How do you wash a cloth diaper?

When washing cloth diapers, it is best to use a detergent that will not leave a residue in the fibers of the diaper. To avoid skin irritation, avoid soaps and detergents that contain synthetic fragrance, dyes, or toxins.

Unless instructed by your diaper service, soaking diapers in water after they are soiled is not necessary. This method can actually encourage diapers to mold. Throwing them into a laundry pale or bag should be sufficient as long as they are laundered at least once per week. Some parents prefer to separate diapers from other laundry. This is personal preference, once through the wash all clothes and diapers should come out clean.

Some methods instruct to add bleach or vinegar after the first cycle. This is not necessary if using a sufficient detergent.

What is in a disposable diaper?

The outside layer of disposable diapers is plastic. The inside is a cotton/polyester mesh that covers a powder that will turn into gel when it gets wet. Disposable diapers are not breathable or biodegradable. For more information on what is in disposable diapers, check out this article by The Diaper Hyena.
